Industrial Visit to Government Sculpture College and Mahabalipuram

On 5th August 2024, 140 students and 7 staff members from our institution embarked on a one-day Industrial Visit and Educational Trip to the Government Sculpture College and Mahabalipuram, an iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Government Sculpture College, Mahabalipuram

At the college, students were introduced to a fusion of traditional and modern sculpting techniques, highlighting the rich heritage and evolving artistry of Tamil Nadu. The visit featured:

  • An overview of stone carving, metal crafting, painting and other intricate art forms.
  • Live sculpture-making demonstrations, showcasing the skill and precision required in the craft.
  • Engaging Q&A sessions where students interacted with expert sculptors to deepen their understanding.

This part of the trip was enriched by the guidance and expertise of Mr. Thangaivel, Head of the Department, whose insights added immense value to the learning experience.

Exploring Mahabalipuram Architectural Marvels

The visit to Mahabalipuram allowed students to delve into the historical significance of Pallava-era architecture. They explored the site’s stunning landmarks, including:

  • Shore Temple
  • Pancha Rathas
  • Krishna’s Butter Ball

Mr. Jashwanthragul, a seasoned historian, elaborated on the Pallava dynasty’s contributions to art and architecture. Students admired the intricate carvings and ancient inscriptions, gaining a deeper appreciation for Tamil Nadu’s cultural heritage.

This enriching experience was made possible through the support of Mrs. Velammal, whose dedication to providing holistic education greatly contributed to the success of the visit.

The trip not only enhanced the students’ technical knowledge but also instilled in them a profound respect for Tamil Nadu’s rich artistic and architectural legacy.
